As part of the transportation of your container we need a chassis or trailer to deliver it. We use a combination of our privately owned chassis and chassis that we rent from the chassis pool at the port. The price is the same for our chassis or a port chassis but we prefer to use our chassis. We only run virgin tires on our chassis and the pool uses recapped tires which are less reliable. Pool chassis are also shared by the entire trucking community and therefore not cared for as they would be if they were privately owned. By providing better equipment we are able to have more predictable deliveries and lower our costs. We do not rent our chassis to other parties and they are exclusively used for the transportation of containers we move for our clients.
The below map is a guideline for our customers for planning container arrival. The Georgia Ports Authority allows drivers to enter between 6 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Most clients request container arrival during morning hours so containers are pulled from the pier one business day before delivery. US Department of Transportation rules allow us to drive no more than 11 hours in a 24 hour period and to work no more than 14 hours in a 24 hour period. Drivers are required to take a 30 minute break within the first 8 hours on duty. Unloading, loading, fueling, pre-trip inspections, post-trip inspections and time spent dealing with tires and mechanical issues count toward on-duty time for drivers. Drivers are required to have a 34 hour rest period within each 7 day work week. Due to DOT regulations, we do not guarantee that containers will be returned to the pier the same day they are delivered as drivers may encounter traffic delays or mechanical issues. In most cases, containers will be out of the port for all of the following 1) one business day for pre-pull, 2) the number of business days indicated below for outbound transit, 3) the number of business days indicated below for return transit to Savannah. Weekend chassis rental is not free so Monday or Friday deliveries will result in 5 days of chassis rental in most cases. Delivery is subject to availability and volumes. Pre-pull for last free day may result in additional days of chassis rental. We schedule shipments in order of release from the port with focus on containers with the least amount of free time taking priority. All shipments will incur a per calendar day chassis rental fee unless using Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), Turkon (TUR) or Evergreen (EVE).
